The collection includes 690.000 finds, including specimens of invertebrates prepared dry (such as the Entomological collections and the collection Malacologica), and collected in alcohol including mainly crustaceans, arachnids, larvae of insects and other finds.
There are several places of origin of the finds:
- regional territory or North-East Italian,
- national territory,
- European countries,
- continents outside Europe.
The collection includes some historical collections, such as:
- the collection of Italian beetles by A. Gagliardi,
- the arachnological collection of L. di Caporiacco,
- the lepidotterogical collections of M. Gortani and G. Patuna.
The Gagliardi collection includes finds of Coleoptera of Italian and especially local origin collected by Aldo Gagliardi (1883-1969). It is a collection of great historical and scientific importance, which is a valid representation of the Italian beetle fauna.
The findings were studied by the major Italian entomologists of the time, including the names of G. Müller, E. Gridelli, A. Schatzmayr, G. Binaghi and other well-known foreign specialists. The high quality of dry preparation and preservation makes it a collection of great importance also from the museological point of view. The collection is kept in two original cabinets specially built, one containing the Carabids and the Cicindelidas, the other the remaining families.
