GEOLOGY AND PALEONTOLOGY

The more than 100.000 specimens that currently form the geopaleontological section are divided into two large collections: the general collection and the Friulian collection. The latter is the most important and rich, thanks to the complex geological conditions of the Friuli territory.

Among the historical collections that have survived to this day are the collection Zuccheri of fish of Bolca, the collection Cabassi (400 fossils representative of the Middle Eocene of Noax and Corno di Rosazzo) and the collection Gortani of fossils of Carinthia.

The most important part from the scientific point of view is that of the Upper Triassic from which come the remains of the oldest flying reptiles so far discovered in the world. These levels have returned a rich fauna to vertebrates, especially fish but also terrestrial reptiles, as well as crustaceans, plants and rare but important invertebrates including a very small spider.

Slightly older deposits always with vertebrates of Raibl, Fusea and Dogna.

Also noteworthy is the rich collection of triassic ammonoids, the cretaceous faunas and, above all, those paleozoic.

Consult the geological bibliography of Friuli Venezia Giulia .

View of an outcrop of Triassic rocks in the Julian Alps, Picnodontiform, a Cretaceous fish found near the Vernasso Quarry (Natisone Valleys), Fossil nests of reptiles in the Carnian rocks (Upper Triassic) of the Dogna Valley, Folidoforide, a Norian fish (Upper Triassic) from the Rio Seazza Valley (Preone): imprint and counterimprint, Clupeiform, a Cretaceous fish found near the Vernasso Quarry (Natisone Valleys), Vertebra of placodont, a marine reptile from the Middle-Upper Triassic of Fusea (Tolmezzo)
